The KLM Wellenreng is a traditional wooden Phinisi vessel constructed in the village of Tanah Beru on the southern coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Renowned for its rich boatbuilding heritage, the skilled artisans of Tanah Beru use rudimentary tools and have crafted most of Indonesia’s Phinisi boats. Measuring 25 meters in length and 6 meters in width, the Wellenreng embodies the classic Indonesian Phinisi design, featuring a hull made from durable ironwood and an entirely teakwood interior. Construction on the Wellenreng began in August 2008 and took three years. In 2011, the KLM Wellenreng embarked on its inaugural voyage to the beautiful island of Flores.
The name “Wellenreng” first appeared around 1500 A.C. in La Galigo, the legendary South Sulawesi epic. Written in thousands of pages, La Galigo narrates the creation myth of the Bugis people. One of its tales features the hero Sarawigadeng, a prince determined to construct a boat to reach his beloved spouse in southern China. The vessel he built was named “Wellenreng.”
After a long and adventurous journey, he successfully returned with his bride and established a kingdom along the shores of Sulawesi. The Wellenreng boat, no longer needed, was eventually brought to the southern village of Bira in Sulawesi.
According to local tradition, the villagers were so captivated by the ship’s craftsmanship that they initiated the renowned boat-building tradition of South Sulawesi.
